In recent news, Paramount has announced that the long running talk show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, has been canceled. The announcement states that the cancellation is due to financial cuts within the Paramount company.
Being one of the longest consecutive running hosts, the news of cancellation is shocking to the journalism community. Colbert’s show was new and fresh, providing a different take on the late night show concept already made popular by shows such as those hosted by Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel. The Late Show took the comedy of late night and meshed it with actual journalism.
Colbert was known for his journalistic style, keeping the broadcast news style at its core, while also developing an entertaining view on it with its comedy factors.
As a broadcast student, the end of just a big show in the broadcast industry feels scary. Such an influential show ending could change how other late night shows and concepts go about their style, staying away from any journalistic style.
As a journalist, my concern lies more with the erasure for broadcast news. While Colbert was known for his comedy, his show provided news to unknowing viewers. He performed a journalist's main duty: informing for the betterment of society. Without news shows and different forms of journalism, information will remain unknown to the country.
